Constitutional Hydrotherapy

Constitutional Hydrotherapy: one of naturopathic medicine's earliest healing treatments.

A deeply restorative treatment that uses alternating hot and cold with gentle e-stim to boost circulation, support detoxification and strengthen your body's natural healing capacity.

What It Is

Water as medicine.

Constitutional hydrotherapy is one of the earliest healing treatments used in naturopathic medicine and remains one of the best ways to increase circulation throughout the body. It is a specific type of hydrotherapy, a term which simply refers to any treatment involving water.

The treatment involves the alternating application of hot and cold towels in conjunction with a low-voltage e-stim called sine wave, applied to the back and abdomen. You lie comfortably on a treatment table wrapped in sheets and a wool blanket while towels are applied to your back, chest and abdomen in sequence.

Your physician controls every variable: the temperature of the towels, the timing (duration, frequency and time of day), the location of towels and e-stim pads, the pressure, the compress and wrap materials, and the level of wetness. Each of these factors influences the treatment outcome, and each is tailored to you.

How it works

Alternating hot and cold causes vasodilation and vasoconstriction (widening and narrowing of the blood vessels). This acts like a pump for your blood and lymphatic systems, creating a powerful circulatory flush that the body cannot achieve on its own.

This increased circulation leads to:

Increased oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues
Removal of cellular and lymphatic waste products
A boost in cellular metabolism
Increased digestive functions

Treatment frequency

Treatments typically last about one hour. The number of treatments depends on the needs of each patient, but a common recommendation is once per week for four to six consecutive weeks to receive the greatest benefit.
